CommFigure
Verson 1.1.5º
⌐1996 Jonathan Dean
Written By Jonathan Dean
General
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CommFigure is a little prgram that is supposed to help you configure all your
Internet tools and applications in one little step - something like Internet
Config. The only real difference between Internet Config and CommFigure is the
approach. While Internet Config is passive, CommFigure is active - it actually
goes out and configures your internet applications - this is so you don't have
to wait for ten developers to support Internet Configs protocol, instead you
just have to wait for someone to write a small module for CommFigure.
CommFigure currently only supports 18 settings of which you can see them when
you load the program. All the important ones are there. By the time this is out
a Beta testing, it will probably support a lot more settings, like Default
Fonts, heaps more server settings and other cool stuff. In the mean time - this
will have to do.
Payment, fees, VISA cards, and anti-mickeysoft slogans
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CommFigure is almost free. The deal goes if you work for Microsoft or sell
Microsoft products you must pay $10 each time you use this software. Otherwise
if your anyone else - you get to use it for free!!!! If this is going on a
CD-Rom or in a magazine (I find this pretty unlikely - tho' really cool) -
please give me a ring, yell, email, or something - so I know to buy the CD and
showoff to my mates <g>.
Improvements to 1.1.4º
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fixed the List Frame Updating Problem when selecting either .plan
or signature dialogs.
Fixed the List ├ problem. Put in a null character before the tick.
Fixed the List Updating by putting a LUpdate function in after .plan
procedures.
Completely rewrote the Signature and .plan Dialog Routines. Uses Text Edit
functions instead of built-in Dialog functions. Added a Get old file and cancel
button - changed done to save as... button. However it now has lost some user
friendliness with copy, cut and paste functions and mouse positioning. will
rectify soon.
Swapped around locations of Homepage (now in Advanced) and login account (now
in Basic).
Corrected spelling error in the News Server text
Corrected spelling errors in help and about dialog boxes, and added some small
refinements.
Fixed the Popup menu in the Downloads folder
Made the choose this folder button also display the selected item
Made only folders show up in the Downloads folder
Fixed character string problems with the Download settings
Two new settings added (for Eudora I think)
- Download Folder Volume (ie. Hard Disk)
- Download Folder half path (ie. :System Folder:Preferences:Bob ─)
Startup Dialogs
Completion Dialog with Error Proccessing (kind of...)
Improvements to 1.1.5º
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saves the old settings
Change to the basic help picture
Much better error handling (it actually works
The Signature and .Plan dialogs should have full access to Copy,Paste etc.. and
mouse editing controls.
Keyboard control over buttons in all dialogs, ie Enter = OK, Cmd-. = esc,
etc....
Improvements to 1.1.7º
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think I've fixed a font problem in the edit text fields - it looks right but
can't be absolutely sure.
The preferences appear to be being saved properly now - can't be sure tho'
Known Problems
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Having an alias of a module on the same disk causes CommFigure to crash on
startup. This can occur for example, when modifying a module in ResEdit and
Apple Menu Options is running (it puts an alias in the Recent Documents
Folder).
The InterSlip module is ineffective for the Password - it seems the Password
Resource ID is variable depending on InterSlips mood :-(. Working on a solution
currently.
Don't distrubute the software with your normal password showing, because it is
stored in the program itself.
Things to Come
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ñ Default Font and Font Size
Ñ More settings
Ñ Either the whole thing into a window, or a moveable dialog box
Ñ Balloon Help
Ñ AppleEvents and other mandatory stuff ( when I learn how to implements them)
Ñ File Mapping
Ñ The CommFigure preferences will be stored in its own preference file
Ñ Faster module finding time and modules will only be able to be stored in the
Modules Folder
Ñ Alphabetic Listing of the Modules
Ñ Pretty looking animated cursor in the 'Searching for Modules' dialog box
Ñ Pretty looking completion dialog box (the current one looks borrrinnngg....)
Ñ The full version is due out end of January '96.
Thanks

Thanks goes to Geoffrey Hughes <ghughes@earthlight.co.nz> for helping me test
this software and Matthew Mora whose code I used for finding Pathnames.

I own all the copyright on this program, you pilfer my code or sell this, and I'll
do ya over. If you work for Microsoft you better pay your money or I'll sue you. If
you work for Apple - keep up the good work!! If your anyone else, you can use
this software as much as you like - but I don't guarantee anything.
